REDESIGNING OF A LOUNGE THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A RUSTIC DESIGN BY APPLYING UNIVERSAL DESIGN

                                                    ABSTRACT
This research mainly seeks to investigate the interior design of the lounge area at the Impala
sports Club. Interior Design up till now has been associated with décor materials, finishes and
products of aesthetic value. But the scope of design reaches far beyond this association. This
study focuses on universal design as one of interior design approaches as well as focus on the
theme of rusticity. The research carried out tends to show how the use of wood as a material
brings about sustainable design.
A qualitative research approach was employed for this study. Data collection techniques
included observation, questionnaires, interviews through semi structured interview guides,
photography. Data analysis was undertaken using descriptive methods including narrative.
Tables, pie charts and photographs were presented to support some of the issues at hand. The
research findings show that although there are vast opportunities for use of rustic design in
interior spaces such as interior finish material.
This research is divided into five chapters. Chapter one covers the background to the study,
research objectives and questions, the significance of study and the scope. Chapter two critically
reviewed existing literature in line with the objectives of the study. The methodology applied in
the study is discussed in chapter three. Chapter four mainly consists of site analysis,
presentation and interpretation of the findings whereas chapter five, summary findings
conclusions and recommendations.
