DEVELOPING CULTURALLY RELEVANT VISUAL ILLUSTRATIONS FOR EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS TO AID KENYAN PUPILS IN IMPROVING THEIR LITERACY

                                                  ABSTRACT
Many recommended educational materials in Kenya do not include visual illustrations that are adequate in terms of their relevance to the social and cultural reality of most pupils. They lack the ability to fully capture narratives and ideas in an interesting way that can excite pupils in the learning environment. Most primary books either have no illustrations at all or have few visual illustrations that are often of very low illustrative value. This is because they are not socially and culturally-specific to most Kenyan pupils. In order to develop quality and culturally relevant illustrations for the educational material, sociological research needs to be undertaken in order to achieve significant results. This research report identifies the qualities of suitable and culturally relevant literature and hence, illustrations for young learners. Ultimately good illustrations will aid the readers improve their comprehension skills and widen their vocabulary.
