Sustainability in graphic design

Design is what links creativity and innovation. It shapes ideas to become practical and attractive propositions for users or
customers. Design may be described as creativity deployed to a specific end. (Hunter, What is design and why it matters) The
single word 'design' encompasses an awful lot, and that's why the understandable search for a single definition leads to lengthy
debate to say the least. There are broad definitions and specific ones ‐ both have drawbacks. Either they're too general to be
meaningful or they exclude too much.
One definition, aired by designer Richard Seymour during the Design Council's Design in Business Week 2002, is 'making things
better for people'. It emphasizes that design activity is focused first and foremost on human behaviour and quality of life, not
factors like distributor preferences. Graphic design is the most universal of all the arts. It is all round us, explaining, decorating,
identifying: imposing meaning to the world. Graphic design is a creative process that combines art and technology to
communicate ideas. The designer works with a variety of communication tools in order to convey a message from a client to a
particular audience. The main tools are image and typography.
