Nairobi Innovation Week 2022

This year’s Nairobi Innovation Week marks the 6th annual event beneath the umbrella theme ’Innovation for transformation and Impact in the society''.

This year’s Nairobi Innovation Week marks the 6th annual event beneath the umbrella theme ’Innovation for transformation and Impact in the society''. The event has different sessions showcasing; Innovation exhibition, plenary sessions and side events such as master classes and Safaricom Hackathon.

The department of Art and Design is exhibiting inventive ceramic products such as a ceramic  toilet molded from local clay among other ceramic products. The ceramic toilet is an innovation led by Prof. Lilac Osanjo aimed at transforming the society as it seeks to minimize housing costs by utilizing locally available material and labour.

This innovation can support the affordable housing government initiative that proposes reduction of building costs through the utilization of local resources such as the naturally available clay soil.

Mr. Peter Ndegwa, the CEO Safaricom while delivering the keynote speech for the annual occasion at the University of Nairobi revealed how the giant Telco company he oversees leverages on technology and innovation to generate solutions that bring about transformative impact in the society. ''Customer obsession, purpose, collaboration and Innovation are the four fundamentals that drive Safaricom to greater heights and have formed what we call the spirit of Safaricom'' said Mr. Ndegwa.

The Vice Chancellor, University of Nairobi, Prof. Stephen Kiama elucidated the motivation for hosting the event while challenging students to make use of university resources to become holistic individuals with inventive skills.

‘This University is a research intensive university with a reputation for excellence and a strong and vibrant research culture and perhaps is a main reason for  hosting the Nairobi Innovation Week,’ said Prof. Kiama in his welcoming remarks. 

The speakers at the event acknowledged the significance of leveraging  on technology and innovation to generate solutions can bring about transformative impact in the society.

The innovation week seeks to take stock of the innovation ecosystem through a participatory approach among different stakeholders such as industries, academia and government to catalyze innovation and entrepreneurship culture in Kenya while strengthening institutional frameworks for innovation.

Safaricom, Mabati Rolling Millers, Elgon Kenya, KCB, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Ministry of Industrialization, Trade and Enterprise Development, State Department of Youth Affairs, NCBA Bank, British Council are among the partners and stakeholders in the 3days event running from 26 to 28 April.
