Background: The number of children affected by autism has risen, with 1 in every 59 children being diagnosed within the spectrum (WHO, 2022). In Kenya, the disorder affects approximately four per cent of the population according to a 2007 Autism Society of Kenya estimation. Such children face certain day to day challenges with the main ones falling under communication, social interaction, sensory sensitivities and behavioural issues.
Dr. Michael Munene won and was awarded the National Diversity and Inclusion Awards & Recognition (DIAR Awards), in the award category:DIAR Award for PWD Inclusion Champions on Friday March 3, 2023 at The Sarit Expo Center, Nairobi. The running theme for this edition is Belong You Belong, We Belong.
Tosheka textile is a well known Business located in Wote, Makueni County that deals with processing of silk thread. During this trip, students were able to understand the process of silk farming and how the final product comes to be. Furthermore, the process of dying and threading was also shared with them and they got a chance to make their own. With the final materials, students got an opportunity to weave a small piece using the looming devices at the industry.
