    Overview

    Philosophy

    The philosophy of the Bachelor of Interior  Design programme is to foster excellence and professionalism in design through intellectual development, creativity and innovation, academic freedom, good governance, integrity and inclusiveness with quality customer service to foster national development

    Rationale

    The rationale for the programme arises from the need for a more holistic curriculum that considers and integrates new technological and digital developments to provide research-informed design that contributes practically to national development and creates employment opportunities in line with industrialization goals.

    Goal of the Programme

    The objectives of the programme are to enable the students demonstrate an understanding of historical art and design perspectives, current design theory and practice, creative thinking and interior design practice; and an ability to cope with future developments in these areas.

    Objectives

    At the end of this programme the Learner should be able to:

    1. Apply theoretical knowledge, creativity and technical skills in solving contemporary  issues.
    2. Formulate and solve identified design problems.
    3. Demonstrate proficiency in research into interior design practice using  relevant scientific writing, logical reasoning and communication skills
    4. Undertake interior design projects that solve human needs with practical, ethical, professional as well as academic perspectives
    5. Provide alternative perspectives by analyzing, evaluating and synthesizing ideas and information gathered through applied research grounded in information literacy.

    The Department admits new students at the beginning of every academic calendar year (which is usually September)

    Mode of Delivery

    • Face-to-Face Mode

    This is through lectures and tutorials using notes, electronic presentations, instruction manuals, group discussions, practical laboratory demonstrations and fieldwork.

    • Open, Distance Learning and e-Learning

    In case of delivery through ODeL, special arrangements shall be made for the practical laboratory, field work and computing sessions. Where not feasible alternative arrangements will be made to do them on campus. 

    • Blended Learning

    This is a hybrid of face to face with Open, Distance Learning and e-learning.

    Notable Alumni

    1. The Bachelor of Interior Design programme is  offered under two modules; full time (Module I and Module II). The degree programme, is a four year programme that  runs for a minimum of eight (8)semesters and a maximum of sixteen (16) semesters from the date of registration.

     

    1. The student shall be required to attend at least 2/3 of lectures, undertake a research project and present a portfolio.

     

    1. To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Interior Design, a student must take and pass all the 57 course units offered. These include the common undergraduate courses.

    Note:.  In the fourth year of study, students shall undertake a research project that will form the basis for the final design project portfolio

    Minimum Admission Requirements

    Admission to Bachelor’s  in Interior Design degree programme will be based on any one of the following minimum qualifications:

    • KCSE mean grade C+ or equivalent and an overall mean grade of C+ in each of the 3 clusters below:
    • Mathematics
    • English/Swahili
    • Any cluster III (Art & Design, Home-science, Woodwork, Metalwork, Building and Construction, Drawing and Design, Agriculture OR

    Any cluster IV (History & Govt., Geography, C.R.E., Social Education & Ethics, Music, French.

    1.    KCSE mean grade C- or equivalent plus a Certificate and Diploma in a relevant discipline.
    2. O Level Division III or equivalent plus a Certificate and Diploma in a relevant discipline
    3. Diploma from University of Nairobi or other recognized institutions and an aggregate of C in KCSE or equivalent.
    4.  A Level with two principal passes, IB or equivalent in relevant subjects.
    5.   Degree from a recognized University.  

     Credit Transfer

    1. A candidate shall be required to send a formal application to the Academic Registrar, using prescribed forms and attaching evidence of the credentials, which would support  the request.
    2. A candidate may be required to sit the University ordinary examinations set and administered by the department under the authority of the School of The Arts and Design and the results approved by senate.
    3. No credit transfer or exemption shall be allowed in studio courses.
    4. The courses in which transfer of credit is sought shall not exceed one-third (1/3) of the total units for the relevant degree programme.

      Exemption

    Students may be exempted from some courses by Senate on recommendation of the School Board provided that:

    1. Such candidates had successfully taken these courses in recognized University or equivalent institution.
    2. Such candidates apply for exemption in writing to the Director, School of The Arts and Design specifying for which first year course exemption is desired and attaching evidence that these courses or their equivalents were taken.
    3. A non-refundable course exemption fee as may be determined by the University be paid with each application for exemption.
    4. Such courses or their equivalents are to satisfy the requirements of the professional training in the first year of study only.
    5. Candidates shall seek exemption for only first year courses. Candidates seeking exemption from first year courses shall be required to sit for examinations in such courses during the ordinary examinations preceding the year or semester of exemption. They shall be required to attain a pass mark in order to qualify for exemption. 
    6. Such course shall not exceed one-third of the courses in the entire programme.

    Exam Regulations

    1. Each academic year shall be divided into two semesters.

    2.  No candidate shall be admitted to an examination unless he/she has satisfactorily attended   the prescribed course of study.

    3. Examinations shall consist of written papers, projects, studios and portfolios.

    4. One course unit shall be equivalent to 45 Contact Hours.

    5.  All course units, except projects, studios and portfolios, shall  be examined during the semester in which they are taken.  Such examinations shall consist of continuous

                assessment, course tests and end of semester examinations.   The end of semester

                examinations shall account for 70% of the total marks, while continuous assessment

                shall account for 30%.

    6.  All studio and portfolio examination shall be conducted at the end  of the academic

            year in which they are taken and shall be equivalent to six course units.

    7.  Research projects shall be examined at the end of the academic year and shall be equivalent          to four course units.

    8. The Pass Mark for each Course Unit shall be 40%.

    9.  In order to proceed to the next year of study, a candidate shall be required to pass

                in any year of study shall:-

                (a)        Be allowed to take supplementary examinations in the course units  failed

                            provided that the number of failed course units shall not exceed  FOUR

                            in the year of study.

                (b)        Be allowed to repeat the year of study if he/she fails to satisfy the examiners

                            in the Supplementary examinations.

                (c)        Be allowed to Repeat  the year if he/she fails in more than FOUR course units in the

                            year of study.

                (d)       Be allowed to Repeat the year if he/she fails in studio or Portfolio Examinations.

                (e)        Be discontinued if he/she fails in more than eight course units.

     

    11.       A pass obtained in a supplementary examination shall be 40% in the students academic     record.

    12.       No candidate shall be permitted to repeat any  year of study more than once.

    13.       The final award of degree shall be based on a weighting of the last three years of the

               degree programme.

    14.       The final degree awarded shall be classified into FIRST CLASS HONOURS; UPPER    SECOND CLASS HONOURS; LOWER SECOND CLASS  HONOURS AND PASS as     Follows:-

                (I)     First Class Honours                             70%     -           100%   A

                (ii)    Upper Second Class Honours             60%     -           69%    B

                (iii)   Lower Second Class Honours             50%     -           59%    C

                (iv)   Pass                                                         40%    -           49%     D

                (v)   Fail                                                             0         -           39%     E

     

    Provided that a candidate who repeats in any of the last three years of study shall not be eligible for the award of an Honours degree.
