The University of Nairobi Community is deeply saddened by the demise of Dr. Steve Njoroge Gachie, who was a lecturer in the School of The Arts and Design for over 20 (twenty) years.

Steve as he was fondly remembered, was patient with the 1st year students, spending long hours in the studio to ensure their baby steps in free hand drawing and photography go right. The assurance came with a unique bonding and encouragement.

As the year master for 2nd year, Dr. Gachie knew each student and would call out any troubled student and always offered to help. Whenever a student was bereaved or taken ill, Steve reached out to them even before reporting the matter to the School.

Steve’s big heart spread beyond the School of the Arts and Design by reaching out to the other members of staff in the college and the University at large. This diversity played out during his PhD graduation celebration where a big number of people turned up during his party.

During any bereavement in the School, Steve not only offered to pray but also to sing and preach willingly. Recently, he provided leadership as the School supported the Director, Dr. Osanjo during illness and demise of her husband.

Steve has been a member of the School Management Board for several years where his knowledge of quality assurance processes was invaluable. He trained the staff and assisted in implementation of the quality processes.

Steve was courageous, sensitive, a mentor, a supervisor and a big pillar for the School. He will be greatly missed by the entire University of Nairobi Community.
