PhD ONLINE ORAL DEFENCE

PhD Online Oral Defence: Designers Not Left Behind.

The School of Arts and Design (StAD)  recorded a milestone after successfully conducting an oral defence for doctoral examination on 11th June,2020.

This was occasioned by Covid 19 disruption which has halted face to face learning and thus the School adopting the virtual administration of examination in order to keep the academic programmes running uninterrupted.

The PhD oral defence was a relatively easier task compared to the complex administration of studio technical courses. In this case, the candidate was notified and prepared in advance for the presentation.

Google meet, as one of the platforms  recommended  by the University was handy in this exercise as it had been adopted in other previous meetings involving the University staff.

Ms. Betty Mwiti successfully  made her presentation for 30 minutes which was then followed by an interrogation by the panel of examiners according to the University examination regulations.
As a matter of procedure, the candidate was asked to exit the meeting allowing the examiners to deliberate on the outcome of her defence.

The entire examination process lasted for 2 hours.

The successful administration of the virtual examination was hailed by the candidate and merited as simple as compared to the normal face to face setting.

In a nutshell, the process went on smoothly setting precedence for the new norm
