The school of Arts and Design faculty staff went through a sensitization workshop on the Open, Distance and E learning module of the University of Nairobi conducted by Dr. Lydia Wambugu and Dr. Wafula from the ODeL College.

The ODeL module is a self learning tool anchored on the Commission for University Education standards that creates convergence between distant learners and instructors.

It is the third module of learning adapted by University of Nairobi available to all registered students for exact learning experiences and particularly efficient for distant learners who are geographically separated.

It is an internet based learning portal with a collection of unique course content from scholars and academicians causing a paradigm shift from a lecturer directed learning to a student directed learning. The module is relayed in small portions allowing feedback and cross examination between the learners and the scholar.

ODeL learning is an efficient program allowing facilities such as Video conferencing to transmit learning sessions across a broadband to distant location.

The sensitization workshop focused on the relationship between ODeL and Arts and Design as an academic Unit looking through the process of course development. The self instructional material should be presented in a way similar to a normal physical lecture.

Course development is a process of creating learning material for the module based on other faculty responsibilities. Dr. Wafula who took the workshop members through creation of interactivity in the module noted that, “It is the unpacking of the syllabus”. The process of creating interactivity is aided by motivational instructional devices such as outcomes and summaries of the material which help to minimize boredom for the learners using the module and is dependent on the scholar’s attitudes.

The trainers noted that the University management is in the process of developing policy on how exams can be administered through the portal while noting that CATs are currently being conducted effectively.

The workshop was held on 20th February 2020 at the University of Nairobi Towers
