NIDEC 2020

Design Kenya Society has launched this year's annual Nairobi International Design Conference (NIDEC) theme dabbed Design zeitgeist Africa (DZA).

The event scheduled for September will run through 25th to 28th and will be seeking to mirror the aspirations, the heart and soul of Africa design for posterity. The conference will concide with the Design Kenya Society DSA commemoration of a decade continuous engagement with designers at home in Kenya, across the African continent and throughout the world.

Students Visit Classic Moulding

The third year class of Bachelor of Interior Design was on 3rd February 2020 out on an industry excursion at Classic Moulding. The brand classic moulding has existed since 1991 and is home to full scale interiors across East Africa based along Mombasa Road. It boasts of reputable delivery of client expectations through great level of workmanship and giving the clientele a chance to create dream living spaces by turning them into reality.

The Kenyan Art Scene

Celebrated writer and artist, Dr. Margarreta wa Gacheru, shared her experience of the Kenyan Art Scene with students from the school. The lecture titled: Opportunities, Issues and Competition was a journey down a memory lane of the growing Art landscape in Kenya spread across post independence period.

Staff Sensitization on ODeL as a Philosophy and as a mode of learning

The school of Arts and Design faculty staff went through a sensitization workshop on the Open, Distance and E learning module of the University of Nairobi conducted by Dr. Lydia Wambugu and Dr. Wafula from the ODeL College.

The ODeL module is a self learning tool anchored on the Commission for University Education standards that creates convergence between distant learners and instructors.

Fashion Needs Analysis Workshop

Fashion and Design students had an interesting guest learning session through a workshop with Jan Miller and  a team from the British Council East Africa Arts on 28th January,2020. Ms. Miller is a British Council East Africa Arts UK fashion lead  and an international fashion incubation expert. 

The talk was part of a three day Fashion Needs Analysis workshop happening in Nairobi between 29th and 31st January. The needs  analysis talk looked at the importance of undertaking a ''Needs Analysis'' as core support to the regional fashion business.   

Visit by Pro- Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barriteau of the University of the West Indies

A delegation from the University of West Indies, Barbados paid a courtesy visit to the School of Arts and Design. The University of West Indies Pro-Vice chancellor, Prof.Eudine Barriteau  accompanied by staff from the University and the ministry of Foreign Affairs- Kenya held discussions with the Director StAD.

Ms. Cecilia Wandiga Visits StAD

On 17th December 2019, the School received Ms. Cecilia Wandiga, who is a Trustee Board member for Centre for Science and Technology Innovations (CSTI) and also an Assistant Lecturer & Sustainability Coordinator at the UoN African Women Studies Centre. CSTI is a UNESCO Associated Centre registered under the Kenya National Academy of Sciences).

The meeting discussed possible opportunities for collaboration with the Institute for Climate Change and Adaptation (ICCA), various industry players and colleges with interests in Kenya. This includes:

BIC ART MASTER AFRICA 2019 CHALLENGE

Students at the School were presented with an opportunity of becoming the Bic Art Master Africa during 

the launch of the  2019 challenge. A team from Bic shared the details of the contest while gifting the students

with Bic products during their class  interaction. The graphics students were particularly encouraged to take up

the challenge as this will give them a chance for global exposure with Bic Art Collection.
